Broward Top 10 football

- — David Furones

Cardinal Gibbons moved up one spot to No. 3, University School is now sixth and Plantation makes its debut in the Broward County high school football top 10. 1. (1) ST. THOMAS AQUINAS (2-0) Followed up the victory in its national showdown vs. St. John Bosco by cruising to a 40-0 victory over Piper.

vs. Flanagan 2. (2) AMERICAN HERITAGE (2-0) Right there with Aquinas after a second consecutive win against a nationally ranked team — this time 31-0 at home against Nevada’s Liberty.

vs. Miramar 3. (4) CARDINAL GIBBONS (2-0) Absolute destruction of what’s supposed to be a somewhat talented American Heritage-Delray team in a 44-0 blowout. Chiefs trying to make a case against the Heritage in Plantation in 5A.

at Dillard 4. (3) DEERFIELD BEACH (1-1) Bucks drop a spot not for the 44-21 loss at St. Joseph Regional (N.J.), but more so because of how strong Gibbons has looked.

at Blanche Ely 5. (5) CHAMINADE-MADONNA (1-1) Decimated by injury, the Lions squeaked one out at ranked Miramar, 14-13, with an early missed extra point the difference.

at Northeast 6. (7) UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (2-0) The Sharks handed Archbishop McCarthy, previously playing in independent Gold Coast Conference, its first loss since Week 1 of 2016 in a 35-20 decision.

at Oxbridge (Sept. 14) 7. (6) MIRAMAR (0-1) The Patriots only lost by a point to Chaminade-Madonna. Senior receiver Dominick Watt scored two first-quarter TDs, but once Chaminade locked in on him, offense was flustered.

at American Heritage 8. (8) WESTERN (2-0) Led 20-0 in fourth quarter against talented Dillard before holding on 20-16. Another solid early-season showing.

vs. Hallandale 9. (NR) PLANTATION (2-0) With dominant performance in 33-0 win over Blanche Ely, Colonels make debut in Top 10. Different vibe, confidence around the team with return of coach Steve Davis.

BYE 10. (9) DILLARD (0-2) Not giving up on the Panthers just because of an 0-2 start. Rallied late in 20-16 loss to Western — that after falling to Miami power Booker T. Washington in Week 1. Doesn’t get any easier coming up.

vs. Cardinal Gibbons Stranahan, North Broward Prep, Cypress Bay.
