Hamilton familiar with hurricanes

- Matt Murschel

Growing up in South Florida, RB is all too familiar with the dangerous unpredictability of Mother Nature. So with Hurricane Irma projected to impact the Sunshine State this weekend, Hamilton said he’s more than prepared for the consequences.

“I’ve been dealing with hurricanes since I’ve been growing up in Miami, so it’s nothing new,” the sophomore said following Wednesday’s practice. “I just want everybody to be safe and to get out of the area and everything will be OK.”

That includes his family, which was leaving Wednesday. “I got news that everyone has to be evacuated today [Wednesday],” he said. “Just to get out the area, obviously it’s a Category 5 [hurricane] coming to hit us. So I think it’s better to come up this way.”

Hamilton remembers the last time he was forced to wait out a hurricane.

“I dealt with a very bad hurricane probably when I was I like in fifth grade or fourth grade; I remember staying at my grandmother’s house and all of this crazy stuff going on outside,” he said. “We dealt with it.”

The American Athletic Conference announced that Friday’s game will be televised on ESPNU rather than previously announced ESPNews.

The last time Memphis was forced to reschedule one of its football games was a decade ago. A two-hour and 50-minute rain delay at Arkansas State forced officials to move the game to a later date. The adjustment meant Memphis had to play three games in a span of nine days.

UCF vs. FIU, Friday, 6:30 p.m., ESPNU
