Lyft’s top trips: Airports and shopping

- By Johnny Diaz | Staff writer

Where did Lyft passengers travel to the most in South Florida this summer?

Yeah, the big airports are a given, but many people needed to get to the DMV, a Walmart and a hospital in greater Miami.

The ride-sharing app looked at the top stops for pickups and dropoffs in the region from Memorial Day through this month.

Naturally, Miami International Airport topped the list, followed by Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport — because who wants to drive and leave the car there anyway?

Rounding out the top five were Aventura Mall, the Walmart Supercenter store at 3200 NW 79th St. in northwest Miami and Bayfront Park in downtown Miami.

There were some surprises among the last five rankings, suggesting that people really needed rides to catch a Miami Marlins home game, perhaps see a doctor and get to class. These were the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Marlins Park, the Department of Motor Vehicles at the Village Flea Market at 7900 NW 27th Ave., the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and Miami Dade College’s Wolfson campus in downtown Miami.

Lyft officials say the service has provided more rides so far this year nationally compared with all of 2016. On average, it provides 1 million rides a day in the United States, according to the company.

“The increase we saw in ridership this summer shows that people are more interested in the convenience and ease of the ride-sharing industry than ever before,” said Samuel Cohen, general manager of Lyft Florida, in a release.

How does our Central Florida neighbor, Orlando, compare? The top five Lyft destinations from Orlando this summer were: Orlando International Airport; Universal Studios; The Florida Mall; Orlando International Premium Outlets and the Walmart Supercenter store on South Kirkman Road. Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom came in ninth.
