Rates for bills
Here’s a rundown on which bills are rising, and which are not:
The city says it costs on average $1,833 to treat a patient and transport the person to the hospital. The charge for basic service is going up $250, to $950. McKinzie and Trantalis voted no.
The $256 fee for firefighter service that homeowners see on their property tax bill will not increase.
The tax rate is about $4.12 for every $1,000 of taxable property value. With that rate, the city would collect more than $130 million in taxes for the first time since the recession hit a decade ago. For the owner of a $350,000 house that grew in value this year by the average 8 percent, the increase in the city portion of the property tax bill would be about $115, with the bill at $1,557. For a homesteaded owner, the increase would be about $30. That’s just one portion of the total property tax bill.
A 3 percent increase in garbage bills will add 92 cents to the monthly bottom line, increasing from $30.69 a month to $31.61. Last year, the fee went up 6 percent.
The fee the city charges to drain water and prevent flooding is going up 25 percent, from $8 to $10 a month. McKinzie voted no.
The city’s monthly charge for water and sewer rises 5 percent a year, automatically. The increases start in October, causing the average bill to go up from $60.09 a month to $63.11 a month.
Many property owners in the downtown pay an extra property tax assessment for The Wave streetcar system, whose construction is expected to begin in the coming six months. The annual assessment of $99 for each residential unit will continue.
