Palm Beach County schools have a plan for how they will make up games postponed by Irma.

Palm Beach County will make up its postponed Week 4 football games on Monday, Oct. 2, per the school district.

The past two weeks of the high school football season have been suspended due to Hurricane Irma in both Broward and Palm Beach counties. Public schools have been closed since Sept. 7 and won’t reopen until Monday due to power outages.

No official plan has been finalized for Broward County for make-up games. The Broward County Athletic Association plans to make field inspections Monday, and if they get the all-clear, football practices will resume as early as that afternoon.

The majority of games from Week 4 were district matchups, which need to be made up for playoff purposes.

In a school district email sent to Palm Beach principals, the county cited Oct. 2 as an ideal date because the majority of teams will be playing their previous week’s games on Thursday, due to Yom Kippur. The email, sent from athletics manager Valerie Miyares and Palm Beach assistant superintendent Eddie Ruiz, said the Florida High School Athletic Association will approve practice on Sunday, Oct. 1 to give teams an extra day to prepare.

The county said schools will have the ability to reschedule Week 3 games, which were non-district, for a Monday or Tuesday that “works best in their remaining schedule.”

Miyares and Ruiz added in the email that the FHSAA said Palm Beach’s plan is in line with other major counties in the state.

Public school teams within Palm Beach county will not be allowed to practice until school re-opens on Monday.
