Timmons still the talk of practice on Wednesday.

DAVIE — Miami Dolphins linebacker Lawrence Timmons, who has been suspended indefinitely for going AWOL on Saturday, remained the No. 1 topic of conversation Wednesday as the team returned to practice.

Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh said he’s reached out to his teammate to no avail.

“I gave him a call but his phone wasn’t working,” Suh said. “That’s kind of been the extent of it. Right now, from my understanding, and I don’t know everything, I think he’s in good hands.”

Cornerback Byron Maxwell said he’s trying to stay focused on Sunday’s game at the New York Jets and not worry about Timmons.

“Really, I just show up,” he said.

“I’m going to be honest with you. I just show up to work, and I let the coaches take care of what the coaches take care of, and I take care of as a player what I have to handle.”

Suh tried to take a diplomatic, big-picture approach.

“I think we have a good gauge of what he is, and he’s a good person,” Suh said of Timmons.

“Obviously this time that I’ve spent around him has been limited. But at the same time, I’ve enjoyed my time around him and really expect the best from him. He’s an adult and a veteran, and he’s obviously been doing it for many, many years.

“At the end of the day, it’s a mishap. Everybody’s had those situations. You can account for me when I got suspended for two games. My teammates would expect for me to do better. But at the same time, I have to deal with that situation and I need to come back when I’m allowed to come back and go from there. That’s kind of what the situation is for him”

Ajayi, Landry don’t practice

Dolphins running back

Jay Ajayi, who had 28 carries and 30 touches Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, didn’t participate in practice due to a knee ailment.

Also not participating were wide receiver Jarvis

Landry, who was limited with a knee injury late last week, defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (ankle) and linebacker Rey Maualuga (hamstring).

Center Mike Pouncey, whose practice participation will be monitored closely all season due to his hip injury last year, was limited, as was wide receiver DeVante Parker (hamstring) and running back Damien Williams (rib). New linebacker Stephone Anthony was on the field but it wasn’t clear how much he was participating. Anthony, acquired in a trade with New Orleans in exchange for a 2018 fifthround pick, was inactive for the first two games of the season with the Saints due to a high ankle sprain.

Coach Adam Gase said Anthony could “possibly” play this week, and said Anthony passed his physical with the Dolphins. Last season, Saints coach

Sean Payton expressed frustration that Anthony wasn’t able to analyze plays quickly. Gase said he couldn’t comment on that aspect of Anthony’s game because he hasn’t seen him play.

Gase was complimentary of Pouncey, the three-time Pro Bowl selection, for his performance against the Chargers.

“He played really well,” Gase said. “It’s really amazing, the fact that he doesn’t practice very much and he goes out there and grades out the way that he does. It’s hard to put into words when you watch him play. He just knows the right angles. He has an unbelievable feel for the game.”
