A 57-year-old Hollywood man was shot dead Friday morning in West Park after he intervened when a homeless man was being verbally assaulted by another man, police said.

Philip Antonino was shot multiple times and died at the hospital, said Gina Carter, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff ’s Office.

The shooter ran away and remains at large. He was bald and clean shaven, had a thin build and was possibly in his 30s. He was about 5 feet 8 inches tall and wore black jeans and a long-sleeve black shirt with white text on the sleeves, Carter said.

The scene played out about 9 a.m. Friday next door to a Kwik Stop at 5551 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., east of State Road 7.

Antonino was walking back to work when he noticed a man “berating an elderly homeless man” who was cutting the grass next door to the convenience store, Carter said.

“Antonino stepped in and told the man to back off,” Carter said. “Moments after their first words, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Antonino multiple times.”

The shooter ran northbound on West 56th Avenue, Carter said.
