Broward football Top 10

- — David Furones

Nova, off to a 3-0 start, debuts in the Broward County top 10 football teams this week, while Plantation moves up a spot to No. 9. The top 8 remain intact. Unless noted, all games listed are Thursday at 7 p.m. this week due to Yom Kippur. 1. (1) ST. THOMAS AQUINAS (3-0) Dominant again in 44-0 win against Stranahan on Monday. Defense tough to gain positive yards on — let alone score. Should handle road trip with veteran poise.

at Centennial (Arizona), Friday, 10 p.m. 2. (2) AMERICAN HERITAGE (3-0) Has to be considered more of a 1B as opposed to No. 2 after 41-13 running-clock victory vs. No. 5 Chaminade-Madonna, which followed victories against two nationally ranked out-of-state foes.

BYE 3. (3) CARDINAL GIBBONS (3-0) Douglas doesn’t usually get beat down the way it did Friday, 49-0 to the Chiefs. Gibbons continues to impress.

vs. Coconut Creek 4. (4) DEERFIELD BEACH (2-1) Another stout defense — like the three above the Bucks. Shut out Dillard, which is top-10 caliber based on talent but dropped from rankings this week due 0-3 start.

vs. Taravella 5. (5) CHAMINADE-MADONNA (1-2) Not dropping for falling to Heritage. Most teams would look like that at the Patriots. Other loss to also nationally ranked Miami Central.

at Piper, then at Blanche Ely (Monday) 6. (6) UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (3-0) Edged out Miami Monsignor Pace by a slim margin, 27-22. Not strong enough to surpass Chaminade. Sharks stay put.

BYE 7. (7) MIRAMAR (1-1) Patriots got first district win in 35-7 rout of South Plantation. Have two tougher district challenges with three days’ rest in between.

at Cypress Bay, then vs. Plantation (Monday) 8. (8) WESTERN (4-0) Trailing Everglades in fourth quarter mildly concerning, but impressive to pull out ugly district win 20-7, after playing another district game Friday, a 43-0 win vs. Flanagan.

vs. Hallandale, Monday 9. (10) PLANTATION (3-0) Three straight from District 12-8A. Colonels earned a key victory in this competitive district, 34-22 over Cypress Bay.

at Flanagan, then at Miramar (Monday) 10. (NR) NOVA (3-0) Titans are off to a strong start with the latest result a 52-6 victory over McArthur to open up District 15-7A play. vs. South Broward Dillard, Stranahan, Cypress Bay, South Broward, West Broward.
