Beckham Jr. out for rest of season

-

The winless Giants will be without receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for the rest of the season as he will have surgery on a broken left ankle.

He was hurt in Sunday’s loss to the Chargers when cornerback Casey Hayward fell on his ankle and pinned it to the turf.

“It’s a sad situation,” coach Ben McAdoo said.

Double whammy: The Texans lost defensive end J.J. Watt and linebacker Whitney Mercilus to season-ending injuries.

Watt broke his left leg and Mercilus tore a pectoral muscle in a loss to the Chiefs. Watt, a three-time defensive player of the year, missed 13 games last season after back surgery.

Flag flap: The declaration by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones that he would bench anyone who shows disrespect to the American flag drew a sharp response from the union.

“I look forward to the day when everyone in management can unite and truly embrace and articulate what the flag stands for, liberty and justice for all, instead of some of them just talking about standing,” said Executive Director DeMaurice Smith.

Bucs change kickers: Patrick Murray signed with the Bucs to replace struggling kicker Nick Folk, who missed three field goals in a 19-14 loss to the Patriots and was placed on injured reserve.

Folk also missed two field goals and an extra point the previous week.

Murray kicked for the Bucs in 2014, going 20 of 24 on field goals and converting all 31 extra points.

Extra points: Browns coach Hue Jackson, who benched struggling rookie QB DeShone Kizer for Kevin Hogan at halftime in a loss to the Jets, said he was undecided who would start this week . ... Raiders QB Derek Carr is expected to return Sunday, two weeks after breaking a bone in his back . ... The Rams waived S Maurice Alexander. ... The Lions released DE Armonty Bryant. ... Bills TE Charles Clay is out indefinitely after knee surgery. Bell in a snit: Pro Bowl RB Le’Veon Bell said he was not told why he carried the ball just 15 times against the NFL’s worst run defense in the Steelers’ stunning 30-9 loss to the Jaguars.

“I don’t think we got enough attempts,” Bell said. “Certain runs we lost yards, but I felt we were running the ball effectively.”

“I look forward to the day when everyone in management can unite and truly embrace and articulate what the flag stands for, ... instead of some of them just talking about standing.”
