Bye week provides opportunity

- Shandel Richardson

BOCA RATON — Now that coach appears to have the FAU football program currently headed in the right direction, he can spend some time working on its future.

After evening their record at 3-3 with a victory against Old Dominion, the Owls have a welcomed bye week. It will give Kiffin and the coaching staff opportunity to recruit the talent-rich South Florida scene.

“We don’t have a whole lot of time in season to do it,” Kiffin said. “We will [this] week with the bye. We’ll be able to get out a lot more.”

Although Kiffin is no stranger to the area — he recruited here often when he was an assistant at Alabama and head coach at Tennessee — he faces a tougher challenge at FAU, because he isn’t at a major school.

Cornerback out of Vanguard High School in Ocala, is the Owls’ only verbal commitment for 2018. The positive for Kiffin is he isn’t starting from the ground up during this week’s recruiting push.

With several high schools having to cancel games due to Hurricane Irma, he was able to evaluate several potential prospects on make-up dates played the past few weeks.

“We’ve gone out when we can on some Thursday nights ... with the storm,” Kiffin said “We lost a lot of that. Kids aren’t playing normal schedules so we’re just doing what we can.”
