Receiver switch makes rival work

- Shandel Richardson

BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic coach made a strange decision when he put receiver

in at quarterback late in Saturday’s blowout victory at Old Dominion.

Franklin entered ahead of sophomore who started the first three games before being replaced by

Kiffin said the move was made mostly because he wanted to try a different look.

Franklin, who transferred in the offseason, played quarterback previously at Florida State and Auburn before switching positions.

Franklin did not the throw the ball, with all his snaps being hand-offs. Parr also received a few reps in the final two minutes.

Kiffin has said in the past putting Franklin under center creates a different dynamic while also forcing opponents to prepare for it. Franklin, who is among the team’s most athletic players, has carried three times for 36 yards and a touchdown. He also has four receptions for 35 yards but has yet to throw a pass. Kiffin has preferred the cautious approach. “Anytime you put a new guy back there, you are reading things and you have a chance for the ball to be put on the ground, things like that and didn’t want to turn it over,” Kiffin said. “It presented itself in the game, a chance to put him in there. He has been practicing that stuff for a while and does a good job.”
