HOLLYWOOD — Shaun Shivers ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns, and Chaminade-Madonna came away with a 35-20 victory over perennial state title contender Miami Booker T. Washington at home Thursday afternoon.

The Lions, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, defeated a Tornadoes team that had a run of four consecutive Class 4A state titles snapped in a state semifinal at Cocoa last season.

With Chaminade (4-2) down 14-7 in the second quarter, Shivers, a senior running back committed to Auburn, bounced outside for a 43-yard touchdown to tie the game.

A botched snap to the Booker T. punter set the Lions up at the 1-yard line right before halftime and led to Shivers’ second score to give them the decisive lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Shivers reached the end zone on an 83-yard scamper through a gaping hole over the middle that put the Tornadoes (3-4) away, down by three touchdowns.

“I’ll just watch film on [Penn State running back] Saquon Barkley, how he hits it. I hit it just like him,” said Shivers, who last year was the Sun Sentinel’s small-schools Player of the Year. “I knew nobody was going to catch me.”

Booker T. was missing junior quarterback Daniel Richardson for most of the contest. He left in the second quarter with an apparent ankle injury, having his leg roll under a defender as he slid at the end of a scramble. Richardson was 5-for-6 for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Chaminade quarterback Daelen Menard threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 6-of-11 passing. He threw for a 79-yard score to Kentucky commit Akeem Hayes on the second play from scrimmage Thursday and found another Wildcats pledge, Marvin Alexander, for a third-quarter 25-yard strike.

The Lions’ defense forced three turnovers. Keontra Smith, Cameron Williams and Benjamin Onwuzo each recovered a fumble.

The previous three losses for Booker T. were all against tough competition — Class 6A powers Miami Central and Northwestern and Class 8A contender Columbus.
