Ezekiel Elliott has been granted another legal reprieve in his fight to avoid a six-game suspension over domestic violence allegations.
A federal judge Tuesday night granted a temporary restraining order blocking the league’s suspension, clearing Elliott to play Sunday in San Francisco. U.S. District Judge Paul Crotty’s ruling comes five days after a federal appeals court overturned a Texas court’s injunction that had kept Elliott on the field this season.
Crotty granted the request for a temporary restraining order pending a hearing before the presiding judge, Katherine Polk Fialla.
Elliott was barred from the team’s facility Tuesday as players returned from their off week. The NFL had placed him on the suspended list Friday, a day after the ruling from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. Players, owners meet: More than a dozen NFL players and a group of 11 owners held an unusual meeting in New York to discuss social issues, a session both sides termed positive and productive.
What was not discussed at any length was the divisive topic of the national anthem that caught the attention of President Donald Trump.
“We heard what they had to say and they heard us,” Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said. “It’s open talks and that’s a good thing.” Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, who has been one of the leading spokesmen among the players, said the discussion was about “everything to do with the state of the NFL now, obviously anthem protests, activism that players have been doing, and how we can move this forward to really amplify players’ voices and amplify these issues and make some sustainable changes.
“I’m not sure we’re close to a resolution, but conversations are ongoing. We are happy that these things are happening.”
Jaguars apologize: The Jaguars apologized to local military leaders for demonstrating during the national anthem in London last month. Jaguars President Mark
Lamping sent a letter to the director of military affairs and veterans in Jacksonville saying the team was “remiss in not fully comprehending the effect of the national anthem demonstration on foreign soil has had on the men and women who have or continue to serve our country. This was an oversight and certainly not intended to send a message that would disparage you, our flag or our nation. We owe you an apology and hope you will accept it.”
