NBC6 adds roles for Vargas, Blanco
Roxanne Vargas has been named the new weekend morning anchor for WTVJCh. 6, the Fort LauderdaleMiami NBC affiliate.
The Miami native, best known as host of the station’s midday entertainment show “6 in the Mix,” replaces Sharon Lawson, who left in August for a morning anchor job at the Fox affiliate in Atlanta.
“I am grateful and excited about this new opportunity to keep our viewers informed on what matters most to them,” said Vargas, a Florida International University broadcast journalism graduate.
In her new position, Vargas will anchor the 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. newscasts on Saturdays and the 9 a.m. news program on Sundays. Her role began this weekend.
She will continue hosting “6 in the Mix” three days a week, and weekday morning traffic anchor Kelly Blanco will host that program the other two days a week.
Vargas began reporting for the NBC-owned and -operated station in 2006.
Before that, she worked for Telemundo sister station, WSCV-Ch. 51.
Her family and journey into motherhood have inspired some stories on “6 in the Mix.”
During her first pregnancy, the Miami Lakes resident did a piece on a prenatal yoga class. In 2015, she dressed up as an oven to share news of her second pregnancy.
“Roxy is a native of Miami fully committed to keeping our viewers informed and prepared at all times,” said Migdalia Figueroa, WTVJ’s vice president of news.
“And her professionalism, enthusiasm and knowledge of our South Florida community are unparalleled.”
