Driskel hopes to build off victory

- Shandel Richardson

Florida Atlantic quarterback needed more time to regain comfort.

After weeks of struggles, Driskel had a breakthrough in Saturday’s 69-31 victory against North Texas. Driskel completed 24-of-35 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns. The yardage was the second-highest of his career.

“Obviously, more reps in practice helped,” Driskel said. “Me giving the guys the chances helped. They can’t do it if I don’t give them a chance to catch the ball.”

Coach had been critical of the passing game the past several weeks. While the blame was never placed solely on Driskel, he took it because quarterback is the game’s most scrutinized position. This was his fourth consecutive start since replacing Daniel Parr.

Driskel had begun to earn the label of “game manager,” with the Owls relying heavily on running backs

and He proved he, too, could be counted on for offensive production.

The highlight against the Mean Green was a 69-yard touchdown pass to freshman receiver The deep ball had been virtually non-existent.

“There’s no secret we had been missing that,” Driskel said. “We hit one. Willie ran a good route. They put a safety on him, which is a great matchup.” Kiffin also gave credit to offensive coordinator

who constructed a scheme that produced school records in points and yards.
