Rasul ready for bigger rushing role

- Safid Deen

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State sophomore running back has made the most of limited opportunities this season behind junior and true freshman

But after news of Patrick’s season-ending knee injury this week, Rasul could be one of several Seminoles running backs earning more opportunities the rest of the season.

“First of all, I’m extremely sorry that Jacques went down, but it’s time for me to step up,” Rasul said during his first meeting with media at FSU on Tuesday.

“I’m extremely grateful. Jacques is in my prayers, but now it’s time for me to pick up and do what I have to do.”

Rasul, who was a four-star prospect out of Coral Gables, has only seven carries for 26 yards with two receptions for 12 yards this season behind Akers and Patrick, who needs surgery this week to repair torn cartilage in his knee.

But Rasul is looking forward to bringing “a lot of speed, a lot of power and a lot of tenacity” to his newfound opportunity.

FSU coach has said he hoped to get Rasul involved at a greater capacity at some point this season. Fisher loves Rasul’s respectful manner, as well as his strength, athletic abilities and knack for being hard to tackle.

“We have great confidence in him,” Fisher said of Rasul earlier this season. “I have said it all along, he’s going to be a huge part of what we do.”
