Surf ’s up, Florida. On Thursday, Palm Beach County commissioners approved a proposed inland wave park planned by champion surfer Kelly Slater.
Documents submitted to the county call for a 2,000-foot-long artificial lake near Jupiter Farms, about 8 miles from the nearest beach. The surf ranch will generate man-made waves perfect for hanging 10.
“Cannot wait to see a bunch more stoked people riding waves,” Slater wrote on social media f after the approval. “This is gonna be fun.”
Slater first shared the artificial wave with the world in a 2015 video showing him riding a flawless, tubular, head-high wave.
The project’s representatives say the park will be home to a surf school and will host world surfing competitions that would draw an estimated 83,000 guests annually. They did not reveal how much it would cost and whether it will be open for surfers to use for a day.
Palm Beach County Commissioner Steven Abrams said developers indicated they will immediately start pulling construction permits.
“It’s a very cool thing to have the perfect wave in Palm Beach County,” he said. “It’ll be a major attraction.”
