Richt pleased with Perry’s progress

CORALGABLES— A little more than three months ago,

was trying to adjust to college life, learn Miami’s playbook and was competing against three of his more experienced teammates for the Hurricanes’ starting quarterback job.

Ultimately, that job went to redshirt Malik who has completed 57 percent of his passes, ranks fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in pass efficiency (144.9) and has led Miami to a 7-0 start.

Perry hasn’t played a snap for the Hurricanes this season and is likely headed toward a redshirt. However, he has been working with the offense and even got a few more snaps than usual this week when Rosier did not practice on Sunday because of some shoulder soreness.

And Miami coach Mark has been encouraged by what he’s seen from the quarterback, a former four-star prospect who arrived in Coral Gables this summer and quickly became a fan favorite in the quarterback race.

“He’s doing well. Just doing little things like ball placement. He threw some really pretty balls today, and when you really know where you are going with the ball, he is really accurate,” Richt said after Wednesday’s practice. “He has a live arm. Doing deep-ball shots and do you go over the top? Do you go back shoulder? Do you throw the ball inside of a receiver because he beat the defender to the inside? He really has a good idea of what to do. He’s getting there. It’s just a matter of putting it all together at a rapid pace.”
