Let’s make a deal
Joshua Esnard, a former Sunrise resident, will pitch his grooming tool on Shark Tank.
Joshua Esnard, 31, has come a long way from his Sunrise garage base of operations where he invented The Cut Buddy, a tool that helps provide fine edges for haircuts and beard grooming.
He first made the device when he was 13 years old.
Sunday at 9 p.m., Esnard will be shown pitching his invention and company to nationally prominent investors on ABC’s popular “Shark Tank” program.
Esnard says he has already found success. The simple, hand-held tool, featuring multiple edges and curves for a variety of hairline finishes, has gone global and viral thanks to YouTube. He has sold 75,000 units to date.
“But,” he said, “my business skills only go to a certain level and it was perfect timing to have this opportunity with Shark Tank.”
The rigors of fine-tuning his business pitch for the show, being a new dad and moving his young family, all prepared him for just about anything that could have happened on the show, he said in a telephone interview from his new home. He recently moved to North Carolina.
The show’s outcome — as in whether he scored an investment from any of the “sharks” — won’t be made public until the program airs Sunday night.
Esnard will travel to Georgia to watch the show with his parents, then to Florida State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance in 2008. There, he’ll speak at the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship’s annual “7 Under 30” program. He’ll be among seven successful FSU alumni to be recognized for starting businesses before the age of 30.
What’s next on the drawing board? He’s working on another version of the original Cut Buddy.
“And there’s the truffle farm,” he said, “but that’s a different story.”
