Lares leads Pines Charter boys to fourth place

Pembroke Pines Charter senior Andres Lares had a strong showing to lead the boys to fourth place at the FHSAA Class 3A Swimming and Diving State Championsh­ip at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center on Saturday.

Lares received All-American considerat­ion in the boys 500-yard freestyle and finished in third place with a time of 4:31.18.

Lares also earned third place in the 200-yard freestyle and clocked in at 1:41.17. He nearly came in second as he fell just one hundredth of a second behind.

Lares had his best finish at states in his career in both the 200-yard free and 500-yard free. He has received interest from Missouri State, West Virginia, and Florida State.

“It’s my senior year and I finished strong and the way I wanted,” Lares said. “I couldn’t be happier. It was just a great experience.”

Lares also helped Pembroke Pines Charter to a fifth-place tie in the boys 400-yard freestyle relay (3:14.16) and they also came in sixth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.28).

“It was a real good night and I bonded with my teammates,” Lares said. “We had a little motivation and spirit in the relays and we were able to get it done.”

Fort Lauderdale finished 14th overall for boys and 15th for girls. Senior Racine Ross finished in third place in the girls 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.73. Sophomore Kevin De Grijze clocked in at 1:52.45 to come in third place in the boys 200-yard IM. He also registered a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststro­ke (59.10).

Pembroke Pines Charter finished 25th overall for the girls. In the girls 100-yard backstroke, senior Kelly Heron took fifth (58.43). Heron also came in sixth place with a time of 2:08.17 in the 200-yard IM.

Pembroke Pines Charter sophomore Rafael Rodriguez came in sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (51.50) and also finished seventh in the 200-yard free (1:43.03).

Pembroke Pines Charter senior Ricardo Roche took seventh (1:54.16) in the 200 IM and eighth in the 500 free (4:42.01).

Fort Lauderdale senior Giulia Guerra Montes came in seventh in the girls 100-yard backstroke (58.67) while freshman Lance Lesage took eighth in the boys 100 backstroke (53.89).

In the girls 1-meter diving, Dwyer junior Aubrey Quintanill­a earned 15th place.
