Dive into midcentury modern design in Calif.

Tickets recently went on sale for Palm Springs’ 13th annual Modernism Week celebration Feb. 15-25 — 11 days of sunshine, concerts, parties, art shows, vintage car shows, lectures and home tours.

More than 200 houses from the 1950s and ’60s will be featured on driving and walking tours. Some homes built for A-list celebrities will be available for a look inside, including the estates of Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Dinah Shore, all representative of the midcentury modernist style.

Among the 350 events are outdoor parties, architecture and design lectures, a stage revue, film screenings and a four-day show and sale featuring modernist furniture and decorative arts. A historical panel, “Legendary Women of Design,” will explore the pioneering work of three female designers who excelled in a male-dominated field. Some events are free, but most cost between $35 and $150. Admission to the more extravagant fundraisers — which tend to sell out quickly — runs $175 to $300.

What defines midcentury modernism, the style that millions of baby boomers grew up with?

Here’s a start: spacious, sleek, glass walls; warm wood interiors; clerestory windows; minimalist, elegant curves; flat or angled roof overhangs; nature-brought-indoors; poolside living; cocktail parties. In short: Space Age.

It was a chance to shake off convention, employ new materials and create everyday objects with clean, simple lines. Your Eero Saarinen womb chair is midcentury modern. So is a 1960s E-type Jaguar, as are the Eames lounger and the ubiquitous fiberglass bucket chair.
