A bumpy ride: Years of work slated on I-95

Plans include widened overpasses; bridges from express lanes to 595

If you think there’s a lot of construction on the highways now, just wait.

By 2024, express lanes will be built from Interstate 395 in Miami through Delray Beach, according to plans unveiled last week.

Also coming: Two flyover bridges to connect Interstate 95’s express lanes with Interstate 595. And traffic signals on some I-95 entrance ramps.

Those changes are part of ambitious plans to keep pace with increasing traffic over the next two decades.

The plans, unveiled at a public workshop in Dania Beach, include: Widening I-595 between I-95 and State Road 7; Adding two express lanes in each direction on I-95 between Stirling Road and Broward Boulevard, beginning in mid-2019;

Adding new entrance and exit points at Hollywood Boulevard and Stirling Road and an extra general- purpose lane in each direction;

Widening eight existing I-95 overpasses: Hollywood Boulevard, Johnson Street, Griffin Road, the

Dania Cut-Off Canal, the C-10 Spur Canal, Taft Street, Stirling Road and the C-10 Canal;

Moving some sound barrier walls;

Modifying the interchange at I-95 and State Road 84;

Repainting all flyover bridges in the I-95/I-595 interchange;

Installing express lane tolling systems, traffic monitoring cameras and digital message signs.

The State Road 84 bridges over I-95 also will get a makeover. Support columns will be shifted to accommodate a wider I-95. The westbound State Road 84 bridge will be rebuilt, and the eastbound bridge will add bicycle lanes and a sidewalk. The entrance ramp to northbound I-95 will be widened as well.

Construction crews started work on extending I-95 express lanes between Broward Boulevard and Southwest 10th Street in Deerfield Beach last year and are scheduled to finish by 2020.

Extending express lanes between Southwest 10th Street and Glades Road in Boca Raton will begin next year. Express lane work between Glades Road and Linton Boulevard in Delray Beach will begin in 2020.

Construction will be done overnights to minimize the inconvenience to the public, said project design manager Jay Turner.
