Thanks for ‘Dancing,’ Frankie Muniz

Did the right person win?

It’s a hot topic whenever a reality series ends a season, and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” could ignite debates with its 25th season finale. The final four celebrities compete at 8 p.m. Monday, and the winner will be named in a twohour finale at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

From the start, actor-singer Jordan Fisher has been the standout, a deft performer who draws on his “Hamilton” stage experience. Violinist Lindsey Stirling also wowed at the beginning, and she has delivered on that promise.

Yet they do not have the name recognition of the other two finalists. Gangly Drew Scott can thank “Property Brothers” and spirited work for reaching the end despite ragged dances.

Frankie Muniz, star of “Malcolm in the Middle,” has been the most enthusiastic. Most relatable, too, because he opened up about battling confidence issues on the dance floor.

Muniz supplies drama as viewers wonder how he will fare each week and marvel at his progress despite revelations of memory loss. When he delivers, it’s a wow moment for him and viewers.

So will the most consistent dancer (Fisher) or the most entertaining (Muniz) win? A lot depends on this week, but these two men reflect the tension between dance competition and popularity contest that propels the show.

“DWTS,” my favorite reality series, has spread a love of dance but never takes itself too seriously, a blessing in these hyperbolic times. “DWTS” remains one of ABC’s most popular series, and its assets include witty host Tom Bergeron, smart casting and the professional dancers who teach and challenge.

Lindsay Arnold, Fisher’s delightful partner, has never won. The other three have: Mark Ballas, who guides Stirling expertly; Emma Slater, Scott’s understanding partner; and Witney Carson, who’s paired with Muniz. Carson cheers on Muniz, and the taped segments underscore that support is richly deserved. He is a child star who has grown into an adult of character.

“DWTS” can be glitzy and silly, yet it teaches that winning isn’t everything. That’s why they hand out that ugly mirrorball trophy to the winner. The show celebrates making the most of your time and enjoying yourself. On those counts, Muniz is the clear winner.
