Owls turn focus to title game

- Shandel Richardson

Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin acknowledged that preparing for the final regular-season game was more difficult than expected.

He had a tough time getting players to focus on Charlotte, which FAU defeated, 31-12, because of them thinking ahead to this Saturday’s Conference USA championship game against North Texas.

“This week was a lot harder, looking ahead,” Kiffin said. “I don’t think keeping them locked in will be an issue.”

The Owls, who completed an undefeated regular season in league play, are hoping they can revert to their earlier form during the eight-game winning streak. Kiffin said he was disappointed with how the team played in the second half against Charlotte.

“For eight weeks, I don’t think we played a bad half until [Saturday],” Kiffin said. “We need to have the right mindset.” ■ The Owls played without starting tight end Harrison

Bryant, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury. He was seen in a walking boot after last week’s victory against Florida International.

Senior Dustin Bowens started against Charlotte in place of Bryant, who has caught 32 passes for 408 yards and a team-high five touchdowns.

■ Running back Devin “Motor” Singletary has put himself in position to possibly join an elite group.

Singletary is just 370 yards from becoming the 30th player to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a season.
