David Itskovich, partner at Broad and Cassel and co-chairman of the firm’s real estate practice group in Fort Lauderdale, recently was appointed to the Parks, Recreation and Beaches Advisory Board for the city of Fort Lauderdale. This citizen board seeks to keep parks and beaches the best in Florida with recommendations to the City Commission, says Itskovich. The group looks at the challenges the parks and recreational facilities face and how to make them better to serve the community.

Why this advisory board resonated with me: When I was a competitive swimmer, I remember the major events held at the Swimming Hall of Fame each year. It left a lasting mark. Now, when I take my two children to the beach or to visit Holiday Park for tennis lessons, I continue to see the joy these community assets bring to our youth.

Impact: The lessons I learned during my competitive swimming, which started at a young age, still carry with me to this day. Sports instill a strong work ethic and discipline in young individuals, and that’s something you carry with you throughout your entire life. That’s why it’s critical to ensure our parks, beaches and recreational facilities remain the best in the state so the youth of today can enjoy and take advantage of these top-notch community assets in the future.

On the board

Cause and effect: The impact that parks and recreational opportunities has ripples throughout our community. It’s about quality of life and ensuring the economic vitality. We are seeing more and more young professionals enter our market, and parks, beaches and other amenities will continue to invite and attract them to the area.

Goal: Identifying areas that require the most improvement is key, and then balancing resources with wants, needs and budgetary restrictions.

Challenge: Targeting and then implementing those activities that will positively impact the greatest number of people in our community.
