Kathleen Wills, DRI Foundation
Kathleen Wills recently transitioned from working at a school to joining a nonprofit with a mission: the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, as director of development for the Florida Region in Hollywood.
It’s not the first time Wills has changed careers. She is a former flight attendant and director of development at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School in Coconut Grove.
Why my job is important: The DRI is one of the leading global research facilities, and it is right here in South Florida. My goal is to raise awareness by sharing news about the research and clinical trials being advanced to patients.
On the job
What I do: As the director of development, I am the chief development officer for the Florida Region of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, responsible for planning, directing and managing all fundraising activity in Florida.
Professional goal: To garner transformational philanthropic support for the foundation and build relationships with prospects who have the capacity and desire to affect that change.
Typical day: Networking and expanding the Diabetes Research Institutes sphere of influence with corporate entities, meeting and stewarding donors, planning and attending events, learning about the latest research, reviewing and maintaining our database, liaison with special event staff and find time for professional development.
Industry wisdom: Stay focused on the mission of your organization. Don’t burn bridges.
Career strategies: Data drives decision-making in nonprofits, and women are influencing the size of gifts and determining organizations that are worthy of their philanthropic support.
Tip: The expertise I bring from my last job is that it is essential to articulate the mission and the vision in a compelling way. Once you have established a core support group, invite them to use their sphere of influence to inspire others to support your organization.
