Protect the Dreamers
The Dec. 30 article “Trump warns no protection for ‘Dreamers’ without wall” shows the president of the United States for who he really is: a callous, soulless, uncompassionate dealmaker willing to use innocent young people (who a cowardly Congress has left twisting in the wind) as political pawns.
It’s unconscionable and beyond shameless for Trump to threaten 800,000 young adults with deportation if he doesn’t get funding for a wall that A) He falsely promised his supporters Mexico would pay for, and B) Most Americans see no pressing need to waste billions of dollars to build.
The two issues are unrelated. According to Trump, the wall is necessary to keep out invading hordes of Mexican rapists and drug mules that he claims are wreaking carnage across our nation. The Dreamers are from dozens of countries, have lived here for years and, for the most part, thrived under adverse circumstances.
The Dreamers are our neighbors, and they should be allowed to live here unthreatened and unafraid. Now is the time to build a bridge for the Dreamers. The wall can wait.
