Regulations can be necessary

- David Goldfarb, Coral Springs

Several letters have touted reduced regulation as an accomplishment of the Trump administration. I would like to remind readers that these regulations were not conceived in a vacuum. The more important regulations are those created because some entity has already abused the system, creating a situation bad enough to warrant a response from legislators. These regulations may cover pollution, banking abuse, unneeded financial risk taking, or overall abuse of power. A second type of regulation are those conceived to promote special interests. This second type is generally unneeded and I fully support ridding ourselves of these types of regulations.

However, history has proven that some powerful men and women will take advantage of circumstances to their private gain and to the detriment of society overall. The regulations attempting to reign in these men and women are truly needed if we don’t want to go back to an era of robber barons and the financial elites causing grief for the masses.

I, as a member of a civilized society, am willing to pay a little more to live in a world where I don’t need to worry about pollution, or financial greed running amok because a few special interests want to get their way. Contrary to a popular slogan, I believe America is already great and getting better because of regulations.
