Dillard handled by N. Miami, sends Panthers to .500

BOCA RATON — Perennial Broward County basketball power Dillard hasn’t been in this position in a while.

The two-time defending state champion Panthers lost to North Miami 59-46 Saturday in the 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classic at Grandview Preparator­y School to fall to 7-7 on the season. Dillard has dropped seven of its last nine games after starting 5-0.

“We’re still trying to work it out,” said longtime Dillard coach Darryl Burrows, who has won seven state championsh­ips at the Fort Lauderdale school.

Junior guard Richard Charles led North Miami (13-4) with 21 points, including six 3-pointers. Seniors Victor Hart and Donte Innocent added 12 and 9 points, respective­ly.

Senior Seth Coddington led Dillard with 16 points and Makerere Williams had 10.

Dillard led 21-19 at the half and scored the first two points of the second half to go up 23-19. But North Miami went on a 15-2 run to go up 34-25 midway through the third quarter. The Pioneers built the lead to 48-31 in the fourth.

DWYER 80, CAROL CITY 64: The Panthers ran their record to 15-1. Miles Coleman and Eddie Davis led Dwyer with 20 points and Bailey Stephanos added 19.

CALVARY CHRISTIAN 55, FLORIDA CHRISTIAN 50: Towson 2018 recruit Solomon Uyaelunmo scored 22 points and sophomore Dante Girardi added 11 to lead the Class 5A defending state champion Eagles (9-5).

MIAMI GULLIVER PREP 78, BOCA RATON 73: Sophomore guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. — who already holds offers from Florida and Florida State — poured in 38 points to power Gulliver (8-7).

ST. ANDREW’S 58, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 50: Senior Jammy Pierre-Louis led St. Andrew’s (10-5) with 24 points and senior Marcus Pelissier added 18. Junior Jordan Battle led the Raiders (6-8) with 12.

ARCHBISHOP MCCARTHY 78, JUPITER 73 (OT): Senior Marqui Jones poured in 33 points for McCarthy (10-5). Junior Trent Webb led the Warriors (7-8) with 20.

MATER ACADEMY 59, PALM BEACH LAKES 42: The loss drops the Rams to 6-6.
