Mary Allen, serving up success at McDonald’s

- By Cindy Kent Staff writer

Mary Allen, general manager of McDonald’s restaurant Nassau Square, in Lake Worth, for two years, was one of several general managers recognized with the McDonald’s Ray Kroc Award, the company’s highest honor that recognizes the top 1 percent of McDonald’s restaurant managers globally for their performance, dedication, and commitment to the organization and to its customers. Providing customer service, mentoring and motivating employees is something Allen has been doing at McDonald’s for 33 years. She began her career there at age 16 as a crew member.

On the job

What I do: I’m responsible for the performance of a busy restaurant open 5 a.m. to midnight daily, and a diverse workforce of about 45 employees, from students, moms, and retirees to career employees.

Create a positive work environment: While not everyone who comes to work here as a crew member will choose to make McDonald’s their career as I have, they’ll take away skills and experience that will be of benefit.

Motivate: This recognition is a tremendous honor and the increased exposure has a ripple effect. So many people tell me I’m an inspiration to them. I love my job, my crew and my customers, and I may have earned the award personally, but so many people have made it possible and share in my success.

Professional development

First jobs are very important. I started at 16, wanting to save money for a car, as do many kids today. I’m fortunate to have found a first job that became a career I love, and could support my family.

Learn: I’ve taken full advantage of McDonald’s career development opportunities, including attending Hamburger University in Chicago eight times over the years, for collegelevel management training.

Knowledge

What’s new: Technology to give customers a great experience, including our App, UberEats/McDelivery program, in-store self-serve kiosks, online crew training; expanding menu choices.

Industry wisdom: Always expect the unexpected. Change is good.
