Funerals were held for geography teacher and crosscountry coach Scott Beigel, 14-year-old Jaime Guttenberg, and 14-year-old Alex Schachter.

At Schachter’s funeral, about 1,200 family and friends remembered a happy band kid. “He was one of the happiest kids in the band — he was really proud to be a part of it,” said Chloe Espey, 15, a Stoneman Douglas High sophomore.

Guttenberg was remembered as a friendly teen who loved talking and the color orange, a passionate dancer and a dog lover. “You are the best daughter in the world and you will always be my Valentine,” said her mother, Jennifer Guttenberg.

Beigel, who saved a classroom full of students, was remembered for his heroism. He was a dedicated teacher, a cross-country coach and a summer camp counselor.

Scott Beigel’s heroism and dedication were the hallmarks of his life.

Beigel, a geography teacher, was among the 17 people killed in Wednesday’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

At least 350 family members, friends, students and colleagues gathered for his funeral Sunday at Temple Beth-El in Boca Raton.

As shots rang out, Beigel unlocked a door to a classroom to let students hide inside as a gunman stalked the halls. While some made it inside, Beigel was shot.

Beigel was a dedicated teacher, a cross-country coach and a summer camp counselor.

The 35-year-old New York native attended the University of Miami and lived in Deerfield Beach. This was his first year teaching at Stoneman Douglas, according to the school’s administrators.

Family members carried Beigel’s casket outside of the temple Sunday, as his parents, sister, girlfriend and others trailed close behind.

Members of the school’s cross country team have organized a run to honor Beigel and the 16 other victims of the shooting. The run begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Pine Trails Park, at 10555 Trails End in Parkland.
