CORAL GABLES – The Hurricanes opened their weekend series against Rutgers with a pair of wins, but couldn’t complete the sweep Sunday as the Scarlet Knights rallied from a five-run deficit for a 7-5 win.

Miami started Sunday’s series finale just as it did in Friday and Saturday’s games — with plenty of offense. The Hurricanes, who totaled 11 hits in Sunday’s loss, jumped to a 5-0 lead after the first three innings on the strength of more timely hitting from Florida transfer Danny Reyes.

Reyes, who had both a home run and a double in Friday’s 7-1 win and a pair of doubles in Saturday’s 8-5 win, gave the Hurricanes a one-run lead in the first inning on the strength of an RBI double. The Hurricanes added four runs in the second after some sloppy play from Rutgers that included an error, a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Miami (2-1) added to to its lead in the third after a sacrifice fly from freshman Alex Toral. Then the Hurricanes made mistakes of their own.

Miami committed three fielding errors in the fourth, allowing Rutgers (1-2) to send 11 hitters to the plate, score seven runs and chase starter Evan McKendry from the game.

McKendry, a former North Broward Prep standout, finished with eight strikeouts, but the seven runs he allowed were a career-high.

The Hurricanes managed to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Michael Perez connected on a twoout pinch-hit single, but Rutgers pitcher Karl Blum was able to get Romy Gonzalez to foul out, preserving the win for the Scarlet Knights.

Miami continues its season-opening homestand with a game against Missouri on Wednesday before hosting defending national champion Florida for a three-game series beginning Friday.
