Garrett Cooper, acquired in a minor deal with the Yankees, hit his first spring home run off Mets starter Jason Vargas in the Marlins’ 3-2 win against the Mets at Port St. Lucie. Cooper, 27, is 6 feet 6 and offers a right-handed power bat with ability to play first base and the corner outfield positions. He sees opportunity that didn’t exist in New York. “There are open spots for everything, either off the bench or whatever position they need is what I’m here for,” said Cooper, who homered off “either a fastball or a changeup. It just kind of floated over the middle of the plate and I put a good swing on it. First couple of games you’re trying to get back to your groove of everything. I was a little out in front or a little behind each pitch. I worked on just trying to stay behind the ball.” … The Marlins got the go-ahead run in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Isan Diaz and Eric Campbell. … After Sandy Alcantara allowed one run and four hits in the first three innings, Jacob Turner held the Mets to two hits in 2 2/3 innings. He used his sinker to generate ground outs and had a strikeout. Turner, formerly a highly regarded prospect who pitched for the Marlins from 2012-14, is trying to make the club as a non-roster invitee. “I’ve got a lot better understanding of what I’m trying to accomplish when I’m on the mound,” he said. … Brett Graves, a Rule 5 draft acquisition, gave up a homer to Phillip Evans but completed three innings to get credit for the win for Miami, now 5-1-1.
