Friday’s game: The Marlins started strong with three runs and four extra-base hits in the first inning against Tigers LHP Matthew Boyd. They managed only two more hits the rest of the way in an 8-3 loss. Three of those early hits were by key prospects — doubles by outfielders Magneuris Sierra and Lewis Brinson and a two-run home run by third baseman Brian Anderson. Brinson, the key acquisition in the Christian Yelich deal, has three doubles in 13 at-bats and is batting .385 while making a strong case for the starting job in center field. Manager Don Mattingly said this week that he is impressed by Brinson’s approach to improving. “I think we’re seeing his at-bats have been pretty good,” Mattingly said. “He’s not just chasing [pitches] way out of the zone, he’s been pretty controlled up there. He’s hit different pitches. I think he’s a guy working in [batting practice], he’s not out there trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark. He’s working gaps. He’s working on his swing all the time.” … Marlins starter Zac Gallen had his second horrific outing, giving up five runs and five hits, including a two-run homer to Niko Goodrum, while failing to complete two innings. The 22-year-old right-hander, obtained from St. Louis in the Marcell Ozuna trade, is expected to be in the starting rotation for Triple-A New Orleans, but it has been a rough introduction to the organization. He gave up five runs in one inning in his first outing and has an outlandish ERA of 33.75. Sunday — at Braves (Kissimmee), 1:05 p.m.; Monday — at Astros (West Palm Beach), 1:05 p.m.; Tuesday — vs. Cardinals (Jupiter), 1:05 p.m.
