Supersized market

- Doreen Christensen

As one Publix closes, one twice as big opens in downtown Hollywood.

Downtown Hollywood got a big dose of shopping pleasure when a new Publix recently opened at Young Circle.

The 48,000square-foot grocery store at 1740 Polk St. is part of the grand $200 million mixed-use Hollywood Circle development, which also will include a CIRC hotel and residences opening this spring. The store opened Feb. 22.

The state-of-the-art store, which is twice the size of the old Publix across the street (it closed Feb. 21), will carry expanded offerings of organic, natural and ethnic foods as well as beach items, Publix said. There also is a liquor store.

The area north of Hollywood Boulevard at Federal Highway is undergoing a renaissance. The site is being developed by Gold Coast Florida Regional Center. The 111-room boutique hotel will be operated by Coral Gablesbased Trust Hospitality. Oliva Restaurant & Bar and the Muse Rooftop Bar & Lounge are part of the 13,000-square-foot retail space, which is still being leased. The 25-story CIRC Residence will house 386 luxury rental apartments with panoramic views of Hollywood Beach. There also is a five-story parking garage.

The developer also is planning another mixed-used project on the western edge of Young Circle. Block 40, is a 19-story development with 166 apartments, shops, offices and a 103-room hotel.

High times at new Lowe’s

Davie do-it-yourselfers, get ready for a new Lowe’s Home Improvement store opening Thursday.

Located at 111620 State Road 84 in the Davie Plaza, the store will welcome customers at 6 a.m., offering nearly 95,000-squarefeet of retail space with an adjacent 29,000-squarefoot garden center, according to a news release. The store will stock nearly 40,000 items.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 11 a.m. March 15, when a $2,500 grant will be awarded to Young at Art Museum in Davie.

The store hired 125 workers, the majority of whom are full-time, the company said.

Macy’s new pop-up shop

Macy’s has launched a pop-up marketplace at the Galleria in Fort Lauderdale.

The Market @ Macy’s, which opened in nine other stores around the country, will feature rotating displays of unique products and services from emerging and established brands in a store-within-a-store setting, the retailer announced in a news release.

The concept aims to offer shoppers an element of surprise with trendy apparel and accessories from S.Y.L.K., Bebe and SkinnyDip London, active wear from Femi Stories and handmade shoes from L37. Other brands joining the lineup in the coming months include J. Salinas Blue and Body Glove, Macy’s said. The retailer wants to expand the product line by inviting retail innovators to collaborate in the Market, offering a chance to break into retail while retaining all the profits.

Last year, Macy’s began launching Macy’s Backstage Outlets. The discount store-within-a-store, which occupies about 15,000 square feet on upper floors, carries apparel, shoes and accessories for men, women and children, and housewares and other merchandise similar to products sold at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. The new strategy is working, with Macy’s reporting a sales increase of 1.8 percent in the fourth quarter.

Macy’s also opened 30 off-price stores in 2017, including at the Boynton Beach Mall and the Falls in Miami. Macy’s said it plans to roll out another 100 outlets, including inside premium malls, as part of its effort to bolster sales.
