There’s still time to call on the Florida Legislature to take action in response to the Parkland school shooting. So far lawmakers are focused on helping make schools safer, but are refusing to ban the assault weapons that make mass killings so easy. Early next week, the House and Senate are expected to vote on their proposals to boost spending on school safety measures and mental health programs. They plan to raise the age limit to buy all guns to 21 and require three-day waiting periods for all rifles, too, not just handguns. They also may allow teachers to carry firearms. Gov. Rick Scott has backed those proposals, except for arming teachers. It’s not too late for lawmakers to listen to Parkland survivors and ban assault weapons like the AR-15-style rifle used to kill 17 students and teachers. The session ends March 9. Don’t let lawmakers go home without hearing from you. FLORIDA GOVERNOR Gov. Rick Scott (850) 488-7146 rick.scott@eog.myflorida.com Office of the Governor The Capitol 400 S.
