Plantation councilman leaves ‘Extreme Christmas’ house

- By Brittany Wallman Staff writer

Plantation Councilman Mark Hyatt has moved out of the home where his “Hyatt Extreme Christmas” display delights and confounds people every year, his wife confirmed Thursday.

Mark Hyatt filed for divorce in January, court records show.

His traffic-drawing Christmas display and the city’s unsuccessful efforts to shut it down have roiled Plantation politics — and cost Plantation taxpayers nearly half a million dollars — for several years. Impassioned by his successful challenge to the city, he won a seat on the City Council in 2016.

So who will keep the Christmas decorations?

Kathy Hyatt said she hopes the two will reconcile, and the display will go on.

“Well, of course,” she said. “It’s what we do.”

Mark Hyatt told the Sun Sentinel he doesn’t foresee a holiday without extreme decorations, either.

But could it move to someone else’s neighborhood? Could there be “His” and “Hers” displays on two different lawns?

Kathy Hyatt said the couple’s 28-year marriage was on the rocks because of a fight over one of their children’s academics. She said the two have been busy in recent years fighting the city and then campaigning for office, and they “weren’t able to keep an eye” on their children.

She said the councilman moved out and lived at his sister’s, but that “reconciliation is happening.”

Court records show her husband filed a motion “enjoining wife from harassing and stalking behavior” just 10 days ago.

Mark Hyatt didn’t respond to two emails or a phone call.
