Ivy Schamis

- Doreen Christensen

As Stoneman Douglas social studies teacher Ivy Schamis, 54, was wrapping up a lesson on the Holocaust, bullets flew through the window of her classroom door in Room 1214, killing students Helena Ramsay and Nicholas Dworet, both 17, and injuring six others. A month after the shootings, the 17-year teaching veteran says she still feels the irony of teaching that day’s lesson chilling. “We were doing a lesson on combating hate.” Schamis, a 23-year Parkland resident and mother, says her heart also aches over the loss of colleagues Chris Hixon and Scott Beigel. “Every single day, I say good morning to all 17 angels. I will never forget them.” Schamis says she will be the voice of students who can no longer speak. “I was always a gun-control advocate. We’ve started a movement here that’s for the greater good. We will go to marches, call legislators and do whatever we can do to change these laws.”
