Slain student’s dad backs push for Ohio gun safety

Fred Guttenberg, the father of a Parkland teenager killed in the school massacre, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, has taken his message to Ohio.

Guttenberg, who vowed to speak out in favor of gun safety at his daughter’s funeral, is scheduled to meet with Ohio Gov. John Kasich on this afterget noon.

Already, eight states have made changes to gun laws, and Ohio may be next.

Kasich has proposed a “common-sense” gun control changes.

Among the proposals: Take away the right to buy or own a gun if a person is convicted of domestic violence or subject to a protection order.

This would mirror federal law and allow local law enforcemen­t and prosecutor­s to take on offenses.

While Guttenberg is in Ohio, he has encouraged students to take a stand. Guttenberg met with students and elected officials at a Cincinnati high school Monday for a roundtable discussion.

“They all need to model after the Parkland kids and organize,” he said. “They need to serious about the issue of gun safety.”

He said they should get wellversed on voting by absentee ballot once they head off to college, and encourage each other to make their voices heard.
