A Marjory Stoneman Douglas teacher won’t face immediate discipline from the Broward County schools after being arrested for leaving a loaded gun in a public restroom.

Sean Simpson, 43, a science teacher who voiced some support for arming teachers following the Feb. 14 mass shooting that killed 17, told deputies on Sunday that he forgot the Glock 9 mm in a stall at a restroom at the Deerfield Beach Pier.

A drunk homeless man found it and fired it, according to an arrest report from the Broward Sheriff ’s Office. No one was hurt during the incident.

Superintendent Robert Runcie said Thursday that Simpson was still teaching chemistry and environmental science at the school.

"We wouldn’t take any action at the school until there’s a final disposition,” he said. “Then we would decide if an investigation or discipline is warranted.”

Simpson, of Margate, was charged with failing to safely store a firearm, a second-degree misdemeanor, and the homeless man, Joseph Spataro, 69, was charged with trespassing and firing a weapon while intoxicated, records show.

About five minutes after leaving the bathroom, Simpson realized he’d forgotten the gun. As he was walking back to retrieve it, he heard a single gun shot, the report said. Simpson snatched the gun from Spataro’s hand.

When deputies got there, they found the gun in Simpson’s pocket, the report said. There were seven rounds in the magazine. They found a casing in a corner of the bathroom and lat-

er found a projectile, also in the bathroom.

Simpson had a valid concealed weapons permit, the report said. He posted $250 bond, records show.

Simpson was interviewed on MSNBC a week after the shooting about his views on guns. He voiced supported for a ban on semiautomatic weapons, such as the one used by killer Nikolas Cruz, as well as bump stocks, which are devices that can turn semiautomatic weapons into automatic ones.

He supported the efforts of student activists at Stoneman Douglas who were receiving national attention for their efforts to pass tougher gun laws.

But he said he was open to the idea of arming teachers.

“Would I have been able to stop this gentleman with a semiautomatic weapon? I’m not sure. Would I have liked to have had the opportunity? I’m not sure I would know the answer. Maybe,” he told anchor Katy Tur, adding, “some of us are willing to take training if it was offered to be another line of defense.”

The Legislature passed a bill that provides funding to train some school employees — such as librarians, administrators and Junior ROTC instructors — to be armed if the district approved. Broward voted Tuesday not to participate in the program.

"My (environmental science) teacher just gave another example of why we shouldn’t arm teachers!!” Stoneman Douglas student Lex Michael tweeted. “Thanks Simpson. Love you.”
