HALLANDALE — American Heritage’s Anthony Schwartz and Tyson Campbell and Chaminade-Madonna’s Shaun Shivers hold three of the four fastest 100-meter-dash personal bests for a high school sprinter in Florida this season.

The three seniors, who are also star football recruits, will all compete for Class 2A state titles in a little under a month after Schwartz won as a sophomore, Campbell their junior year – when Schwartz pulled up with a hamstring injury – and Shivers finished as runner-up both times.

On Thursday night, the three met at the District 15-2A track and field finals at Hallandale for the first of three postseason face-offs.

Schwartz won in 10.24 seconds. Shivers was second in 10.38. Campbell finished third (10.43).

“I wanted to run faster, especially with this wind,” said Schwartz, an Auburn signee whose best is 10.13 — tops in the nation this season. “Sometimes it doesn’t work out that way, and just getting the win is the most important thing.”

They finished 1-2-3 in the 200, as well. Schwartz ran it in 20.70 seconds. Shivers set a new personal best (21.00) and Campbell 21.10.

“It was good, getting to feel the competition again,” said Shivers, also signed to Auburn, with a best of 10.29 in the 100. “In the 100, I just have to stay in my drive phase and pump my arms. In the 200, I just have to run the curve how I did, but coming down the back stretch, I just have to keep pumping.”

Said Campbell, whose bests are 10.39 and 20.80: “It just goes to show how fast Florida really is, the hard work we put in and that track and field is really big down here.”

Along with Schwartz and Campbell, Patrick Surtain II and Miles Jones run in the nation’s top 4x100 relay team for the Patriots. They won easily, but half a second off their best – 40.81 seconds Thursday compared to 40.31.

The district meet also previewed the team battle between the Heritage boys and Hallandale. Last year, the Chargers took the 2A crown by a single point over the Patriots.

Both the Hallandale boys and girls took team district titles. The boys edged second-place Heritage by a margin of 148-111, and the girls topped the runner-up Patriots by 154 points.

Hallandale’s Milton Ingraham was a double winner in the shot put (58-9.5) and discus (155-3). Amari Johnson provided two district hurdling titles – 14.44 in the 110 and 38.03 in the 300. Peter Anderson won the 400 (47.85), and the Chargers won the 4x400 relay (3:17.86) and 4x800 (8:23.80).

The Heritage boys also got a long jump title from Dyllon Lester (22-6.25).

Calvary Christian had Danny Ferro win the 800 (1:58.23) and 1600 (4:31.92)

The Charger girls had Takira Williams as a double winner in the long jump (19-2.75) and triple jump (37-8.75), Daishon Spann win the 800 (2:14.33) and high jump (5-3), Sydney McGinley win the 100 hurdles (43.09), Amani Heaven the shot put (40-2.25) and Nelia Simeon the discus (137-9). They also won the 4x800 relay (9:33.26).

The Heritage girls won their 4x100 relay (46.60) and 4x400 relay (3:46.61). For more complete results, log on to sun-sentinel.com/ sports/highschool.
