Q: We have both the SunPass and an EZPass on our windshield. Do we risk being charged double, by both, as we pass through tolls traveling from Florida to Maine? Geri Peterson, Menomonee Falls, WI.

A: No. SunPass and E-ZPass are not compatible yet so toll sensors in the Northeast won’t recognize SunPass transponders and most of Florida’s toll sensors won’t recognize EZPass.

However, E-ZPass should be compatible with the E-Pass in the Orlando area by summer and the toll sensors are programmed to tell the difference.

If you think you have been charged double, contact SunPass at 888-865-5352, or E-Pass at 800-353-7277. There are 17 different phone numbers to contact E-ZPass customer service — one for each state that uses E-ZPass. You can find each online.

Q: Please advise if hybrid and electric vehicles are still exempt from paying tolls if the express lane decal is displayed on the rear window. Mitchel Bass, Parkland.

A: The exemption has been extended to Sept. 30, 2019. Florida has allowed hybrid, electric and other low-emission vehicles to drive in high-occupancyvehicle lanes with only one person in the car during rush hours.

When I-95 express lanes replaced some HOV lanes, those vehicle owners drove toll free if they applied for a special decal by calling 800-234-7433 or going online to 1800234ride.com.
