AROUND THE HORN

-

Mariners: Despite a 9-2 loss to the Astros, they turned a triple play more likely to be seen in a Little League game than the major leagues. With runners at first and second and no outs in the fourth inning, Evan Gattis hit a check-swing ground ball to third base. Kyle Seager stepped on third and threw to second base to force Carlos Correa. Gattis finished running to first but apparently believed it was the third out and turned to jog back to the dugout. Seager noticed what was happening, and Robinson Cano threw to Daniel Vogelbach, who applied the tag.

Braves: 1B Freddie Freeman avoided serious injury when he was hit on his left wrist by a pitch Wednesday from the Phillies’ Hoby Milner. Freeman said the ball hit one-half inch from where he was hit by a pitch last season, causing a fracture that forced him to miss seven weeks. X-rays showed no structural damage.

Tigers: Leonys Martin hit his first big league grand slam and Jeimer Candelario had four hits and three RBIs in a 13-8 victory over the Orioles, who’ve lost six straight. Yankees: RHP Tommy Kahnle will be shut down for 10 days and likely miss a few weeks after being diagnosed with biceps and shoulder tendinitis . ... 1B Tyler Austin had his hearing to appeal his five-game suspension for his part in a brawl with the Red Sox.

Austin was suspended by MLB after charging the mound at Fenway Park on April 11 when reliever Joe Kelly threw at him twice.

Cardinals: OF Tyler O’Neill, one of the team’s highly-regarded prospects, was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. O’Neill hit .388 with six homers and 18 RBIs in 12 games in the minors. RHP John Brebbia was sent down.

Rangers: Cuban OF Julio Pablo Martinez, 22, agreed to a minorleague contract with the organization that includes a $2.8 million signing bonus and will make his debut in the Dominican Summer League. He said through an interpreter that his goal is to be in the majors within three years.
