Tragic shooting spurs a different response
In his April 22 South Florida 100 entry, Congressman Ted Deutch states it well: “The NRA is hardly the honest representative of responsible American gun owners. But beyond its mean-spirited behavior, it may also be inappropriately using foreign donations for its political activity. This would be a violation of federal election law, and the FBI and Federal Election Commission are reportedly investigating.”
As Deutch states, we have marked the anniversaries of the Virginia Tech and Columbine mass shootings and remembered the victims. Usually what happened in the past is politicians gave you their prayers and thoughts (really?), news fades, and CNN moves on to next story. But it doesn’t fade for hapless victims and their relatives and friends, or for each location.
But now, thanks to many town hall meetings, politicians like Sen. Marco Rubio are asked “How much did NRA give you?” Now great papers publish stories about the latest mass murder. Students in Parkland are speaking out against our politicians and demanding action (not BS).
Youngsters here in Broward County are registering to vote and will vote in November for politicians who support gun control (ex: Bill Nelson vs. Rick Scott for Senate).
Teachers are united in this cause, along with demands for a living wage.
