Owner watches burglary of home on cellphone video

- By Wayne K. Roustan Staff writer

A Cooper City woman watched helplessly on her cellphone as a burglar ransacked her home and Broward Sheriff’s detectives are searching for him.

A security company called Michelle MillerHayle at work Monday when her home’s alarm was activated and she was able to view her home surveillance cameras remotely through a cellphone app, according to WPLG-Ch.10.

The surveillance video shows a man — wearing blue jeans, blue sweatshirt, and dark baseball cap — running around inside the home she shares with her husband and two children, trying to open doors while his hands were full of stolen jewelry. He dropped some while making his escape out a side door.

The video also shows deputies inside the house moments later with guns drawn but the burglar was gone.

A neighbor’s security camera recorded video of what appeared to be the burglar speeding away in a blue, fastback sports car, news reports said.

Miller-Hayle told reporters the burglar appeared to climb through her daughter’s bedroom window and may have set off the alarm when he failed to break the impact-resistant glass.

Her husband, Chris, said he was shocked, surprised, angry and felt his family’s privacy had been invaded, according to WSVN-Ch.7.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the suspect’s identity to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
