Surgery to KO Seager for the season

- News services

PHOENIX — Dodgers star shortstop Corey Seager will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

The team announced Monday that Seager was going on the 10-day disabled list with a right ulnar collateral ligament sprain.

Seager, the NL Rookie of the Year in 2016, was hitting .267 with two home runs and 13 RBIs. Seager’s loss is a major blow to the Dodgers, who are off to a 12-15 start and trailed the Diamondbacks by seven games in the NL West heading into the opening game Monday of a fourmer, game series in Phoenix.

The Dodgers recalled Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill Seager’s roster spot.

Seager joins these teammates already on the DL: third baseman Justin Turner (broken left wrist), outfielder Yasiel Puig (hip pointer, bruised foot) and starting pitcher Rich Hill (left middle finger inflammation). Second baseman Logan Forsythe is on the DL with right shoulder inflammation, meaning the Dodgers will be playing without three of their four starting infielders in Seager, Turner and Forsythe.

Seager had been dealing with the elbow issue since last sum- and it caused him to miss some games. This spring, he said every throw he made late last season was bothering him.

He had tried to rehab the injury over the winter to avoid surgery. That offseason strengthening program delayed the start of his throwing this spring.

Since his first full season in 2016, Seager leads all shortstops with 13.3 Wins Above Replacement, according to FanGraphs. He ranks fifth among all position players, behind only Mike Trout (18.4 WAR), Mookie Betts (15.6), Jose Altuve and Kris Bryant (15.4 each).
