What to watch for on Day 2

- By David Furones Staff writer

JACKSONVILLE – Multiple teams from Broward and Palm Beach counties will have a shot at winning titles on Day 2 of the state track and field championships at the University of North Florida.

With potential winners in various events, Hallandale will look for the team crown in both boys’ and girls’ competition in Class 2A. After Destiny Castillo won the long jump for the Chargers on Friday evening, the girls will look for many more points on Saturday — in the hurdles from Sydney McGinley, throws from Amani Heaven and Nelia Simeon, triple jump from Takira Williams and the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams.

The Chargers won the boys’ title last year. Amari Johnson can bring them titles in hurdling events and Milton Ingraham in the discus and shot put — plus Peter Anderson in the 400.

They’ll get a strong push from American Heritage, which has Anthony Schwartz seeking state redemption in the 100 and 200 after tweaking his hamstring as a junior. Schwartz has run the No. 1 times in both events this season in the U.S. and anchors the Patriots’ 4x100 relay, also with the top time nationally.

Miramar senior Jamal Walton has run the No. 1 400 in the U.S. and will look to lead those Patriots to a Class 4A boys’ title. He’ll get help from fellow sprinters Terrence Horne and Taylor Banks.

Broward also has the fastest girl in the 100. Northeast’s Briana Williams looks to bring home the Class 3A gold for the Hurricanes there. They also have hurdler Carshaylah Harrison and Jan’Taijah Ford in the 400.

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls in 4A have sophomore and defending state champ Zatoria Thompson competing in the high jump.

King’s Academy has Brandon Prichard in the boys’ 1A shot put and Brianna Oats in the girls’ 100 hurdles.
