North’s ‘terrorists’ comment angers dad

In a torrent of tweets, the parent of a murdered Stoneman Douglas student railed at the National Rifle Association’s new president Oliver North for branding the gun-control activists borne out of the Parkland shooting as “civil terrorists.”

“They’re not activists—this is civil terrorism. This is the kind of thing that’s never been seen against a civil rights organization in America,” North told the Washington Times. “You go back to the terrible days of Jim Crow and those kinds of things—even there you didn’t have this kind of thing.”

Survivors of the Parkland school shooting, which left 17 dead and 17 injured, criticize the NRA for its campaign to block stricter gun laws. They have also called on companies to break ties with the association.

Likewise, since 14-year-old Jaime Guttenberg was among those slain by an exstudent armed with an assault-style rifle on Feb. 14, her father Fred Guttenberg has emerged as an outspoken advocate for school safety and gun control.

North’s comments activated Guttenberg’s trip wire: “Your ridiculous, hateful, shameful, cruel, stupid, pathetic remark has certainly tested me.”

The grieving father fashioned a response specifically directed at the former Reagan-era security adviser who was convicted on charges related to the IranContra affair.

“Oliver North, my name is Fred Guttenberg. My daughter was killed in Parkland on Feb. 14. I have been a fierce advocate for gun safety since then, and yes, I have called out the NRA for the actions of the leadership, including the terror-like actions to include the videos such as ‘Your Times Up’,” Guttenberg tweeted.

“When I heard you were selected President of the NRA, it was my hope that you would have gained a moral compass at some point during your adult life. Clearly that did not happen. How dare you call me a civil terrorist!!! How dare you call the kids and other parents civil terrorists,” Guttenberg continued.

“We are fighting for our life and the memory of those we loved. What would have been appropriate is if you put out a statement asking to speak with me to offer a condolence. People are who they are, and I guess over the years you have not changed,” Guttenberg wrote.

“Throughout this process I have refused to personally attack anyone. However, your ridiculous, hateful, shameful, cruel, stupid, pathetic remark has certainly tested me. So that we are clear, the other Parkland gun crime victims and I are not civil terrorists,” he said.

“We are a determined group. We will end your reign of terror and we will pass common sense gun safety in this country. Your remarks sound like the remarks of a lobby that has already lost the argument and so you attack us,” Guttenberg concluded.

North claimed the NRA was the target of a “cyberwar,” according to The Guardian.

“They can do all the cyberwar against us — they’re doing it. They can use the media against us – they are. They’ve gone after our bank accounts, our finances, our donors and obviously individual members. It’s got to stop,” North said, according to MSN.com.

“They’re not activists—this is civil terrorism.”
