Seminole Ridge loses lead in state final
BOCA RATON — For the second straight year, Seminole Ridge finished the flag football season as a state runner-up.
Tampa Alonso earned its first state title with a 19-7 come-from-behind win over the Hawks at Boca Raton High.
In the championship game, Seminole Ridge (14-2) took the lead midway through the second quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Haylie Young to Ashley Hollandsworth.
Hollandsworth also caught the PAT pass to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead.
Alonso got on track offensively with three second-half touchdowns to take over.
“I couldn’t be prouder of my team. They played hard throughout the game,” Seminole Ridge coach Scott O’Hara said.
Both Seminole Ridge and Alonso had convincing wins in the semifinals earlier Saturday. Alonso blanked Wekiva 24-0, while the Seminole Ridge Hawks trounced Cooper City 33-6. In their semifinal win, the Hollandsworth threw four touchdown passes, caught a TD pass and grabbed three interceptions.
In the 1A final, two-time defending state champion Robinson (Tampa) played Miami Edison. Robinson, led by quarterback Lauren King who threw two touchdown passes to lead the Knights to a 16-0 win against the Lady Red Raiders in the championship game.
In the morning semifinals, Robinson beat Clay (Greencove Springs) 24-0, while Edison blanked Glades Central 13-0.
