See unlimited movies at the theater

- Doreen Christensen

Summer movie season has arrived.

“Deadpool 2” hit theaters Friday, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is set to unspool next week and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” opens in June. There are more than 20 blockbusters opening through August.

The movies are a great way to stay cool over the summer, but they’re expensive. A ticket, popcorn and a drink can set you back $20 or more per person.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a monthly subscription service that let you see all the movies you want each month for one low price.

Say hello to MoviePass. It’s essentially Netflix for the theater.

For $9.95 a month, the service allows users to see unlimited movies at 4,000 theaters. Or, opt for the $7.95 per month plan and see three movies per month. Better yet, MoviePass is running a special offer for a free month when you refer up to three friends. They’ll get a free month, too, according to a Twitter post.

Here’s how it works: Sign up at MoviePass.com and then download the free mobile app on your smartphone. You’ll soon get a MoviePass card in the mail. Movies and showtimes are listed in the app; when you get to the theater, select the film you want to see and the company deposits the cost of the movie onto your card. Swipe it at the theater box office to get your ticket.

The deal seems too good to be true, but the service has more than 2 million members and is growing in popularity.

MoviePass has been making headlines, with critics saying the service can’t sustain itself since it pays full price to theaters for tickets, which means it’s losing money. MoviePass said it expects users will eventually see less than two movies a month over time, which would sustain its business plan.

Whatever. Considering the monthly service costs less than one movie ticket, I’d say it’s worth the risk — especially for teens and ’tweens. With so many movies opening this summer, MoviePass will more than pay for itself, at least through August.
